Westminster Opera Co. was founded in 2008 by Guy Hopkins FRSA. WOCo. exists to provide a life-changing artists-in-residence programme for newly established singers, players and production team members in London and South West France with related cross-cultural exchange. WOCo. launched with a sell-out production of Acis and Galatea at the Château de Panloy in 2009 and has continued to produce highly successful performances every year since. WOCo. can't wait to be back at the Château this summer with the 2021 production of Hänsel und Gretel.
Guy Hopkins studied at Oxford University, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London) and at Dartington International Summer School under Diego Masson. He has worked with Opera Brava, Bampton Summer Opera, and The Other Theatre Company in productions at The Lyric Hammersmith, Battersea Arts Centre and the Holywell Music Rooms.
He is Associate Conductor of the Camden Chamber Orchestra and has conducted concertos with pianist Joanna Macgregor. As Director of Music at Westminster School he has directed performance in St John's Smith Square and Westminster Abbey (Dream of Gerontius) working with soloists such as Rosalind Plowright and Donald Maxwell, as well as many co-productions with the Westminster School Drama Department including Weill's Street Scene, Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Bernstein's West Side Story.
Stephen Taylor studied English at Trinity College, Cambridge, and from 1991 to 1995 was an assistant director at the Geneva Grand Théâtre. From 1992 onwards, he assisted Pierre Strosser in Geneva, Strasbourg, Lyon, Paris and Adelaide and then co-directed L'Isola disabitata and Dido and Aeneas with Dominique Pitoiset for the Paris National Opera's Atelier Lyrique.
In 1999 he directed Idomeneo for the Opéra National de Lyon, followed by The Rape of Lucretia for the Opéra du Rhin and Don Pasquale for Les Nuits Romantiques du Bourget in Aix-les-Bains. He restaged the Mariinsky Theatre's Ring Cycle for Valery Gergiev in Saint Petersburg, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, in Seoul and in Tokyo. In 2006 He directed Franz Léhàr's Frühling at the Opéra-Comique in Paris and the Théâtre de Suresnes, followed by Der Fliegende Holländer at the Prague State Opera in 2008 and Il Trovatore for the Geneva Grand Théâtre in 2009.
In 2010, he directed the first production in France of Martinu's Mirandolina for the Atelier Lyrique in Paris.
